It
was quite unfortunate that the 23rd death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino last Monday,
although declared as a legal holiday, was not given much importance in the local
level.
Not
a few did not know the reason why last Monday was a holiday. Those who knew, did
not know much about Ninoy Aquino, they only know him as an international airport
in Manila. What?
Is
it because the political lineage in this country is becoming too blurred?

Even
the national government did not pay much attention to highlighting the death anniversary
of the person who sparked the restoration of democracy in the country.
Because
of this recalcitrant attitude of the incumbent administration of Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo, she has been tagged by some pro-Aquino forces as a dictator in the making.
Eugenia
Apostol, founder of the anti-Marcos Philippine Daily Inquirer, minched no words
in describing GMA as heir-apparent of the late strongman.

While
the local group of Justice for Aquino, Justice for All (JAJA) led by former Vice
Mayor Jorge Cabalit held a commemorative mass at the K of C last Monday morning
but the forum that followed was focused on the charter change rather than extolling
the virtues of the fallen senator.
Without
offending the senses of the Knights of Rizal and other pro-Rizal historians, it
is our considered opinion that Ninoy Aquino's heroism is at par with that of Rizal.
For
one, Ninoy was very much aware of his impending brutal assassination once he sets
foot in Manila from his exile.

All
told, Ninoy Aquino is the modern day Rizal for the Filipinos be that in his style,
oratory and politics.
Ninoy
Aquino made a declarative statement: The Filipino is worth dying for. We make
that a question now, is the Filipino really worth dying for? What have we gained
after EDSA I? EDSA II and III?
Kris
Aquino should better answer that question first rather than be contended in projecting
herself as the queen of game show hosts.
