Signal No. 1 up over
Batanes, Babuyan Is.

MANILA. Public Storm Warning Signal No. 1 has been raised over the province of Batanes and the Babuyan group of islands as tropical storm "Inday" (international codename Bopha) "slowed down as it begins interacting with" a new typhoon, "Juan" (international codename Saomai), that has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The storm signal means winds of between 30 to 60 kilometers per hour can be expected in affected areas.

As of 10 a.m. yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed Inday at 400 kilometers northeast of Batanes' capital, Basco, and Juan at 1,130 kilometers east northeast of there.

Inday packed maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center with gusts of up to 100 kph, and was moving west at 7 kph. It was forecast to move closer to 300 kiloemeters north northeast of Basco on this morning, 190 kilometers north of there tomorrow and 160 kilometers west northwest of Basco by Friday morning.

Juan had winds of 130 kph and gusts of up to 160 kph. It was moving west northwest at 22 kph.

PAGASA predicted Juan to be 750 kilometers east northeast of Basco on today, 570 kilometers north northeast of there tomorrow, and 750 kilometers north northeast by Friday.

The weather disturbances are expected to enhance the southeast monsoon and bring rains over the western sections of the country, PAGASA said.

The Batanes and Calayan group of islands will experience rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas while the western sections of the country will experience monsoon rains, PAGASA said.

"The rest of the country will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms," it added.
