P25-M fire hits Talibon
By KIT BAGAIPO

At least P25-million worth of merchandise and market building were turned to ashes as the old Talibon Public Market was gutted by fire early dawn yesterday.

The fire which started at around 1:45 in the morning in one of the market's interior stalls owned by a certain Oscar Decada rapidly spread as gusty winds brought by typhoon 'Seniang' blew through the blaze burning down the entire edifice mostly constructed of light materials.

FO1 Teoderico Auxtero, investigator of the Talibon Fire Station, told the Chronicle that not a single stall owner was able to salvage their merchandise.

Only a section of the market's concrete structure was left when the fire was finally put off around 5 o'clock in the morning Fire fighters from the towns of Tubigon, Calape, Loon, Clarin, Jagna, Ubay, Carmen and Tagbilaran City responded to the fire alarm which was raised by police and barangay tanods on-duty near the burned market.

Initial investigations reveal that the fire may have been caused by faulty electrical wirings as one witness allegedly saw sparks and fumes coming from Decada's stall.

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Bayan of Talibon town will hold an emergency session today to adopt a resolution requesting Pres. Gloria Arroyo to declare the town in a state of calamity so that the municipality could utilize its calamity fund.

Gov. Erico Aumentado also ordered the release of P2 million from the provincial government as part of the funds needed to rehabilitate the public market.
