THE MANNY PACQUIAO FEVER

After all had been said and done, Manny Pacquiao may now be considered as the greatest Filipino boxer of all times surpassing the likeness of a Flash Elorde, Rocky Marciano or a Pancho Villa and other Filipino boxing greats ahead of him.

It's no surprising therefore for the two leading boxing promoters, Top Rank of Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar dela Hoya to be locked up in power struggle to promote Pacquiao's future fight with Marco Antonio Barrera.

But as correctly point out by our friend Hermie Rivera, an acknowledged boxing analyst, it is not farfetched if the two promoters will join forces to promote the Pacquaio-Barrera fight, all for the love of money, este, boxing.

There is no doubt that the Manny Pacquiao fever hit the country after that three-round knockout last Sunday. The country stood still as our pound-for-pound boxer wrote boxing history in his trilogy with Morales, himself a Mexican boxing icon.

Streets were deserted, malls were filled and cinemas showing the bout were on a standing room only.

But we do not agree to a streamer caught by the camera during the boxing bout using the Philippine flag with the words: "Pacquiao for President."

God porbid, err, forbid.

ADVISORY. The National Movement of Young Legislators and the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council will jointly convene a Local Legislators Conference on Juvenile Justice and Welfare starting on Friday until Sunday at the Royal Madaya Hotel in Davao City.

The primary objective of the conference is to orient local legislators in all levels of local governments on the details of Republic Act 9344 otherwise known at the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006. We have consistently opposed that law and the conference would be a very good avenue to raise such opposition.

If plans to do not miscarry, the city council will be sending City Councilors Lucio Balbin, Urbano Lagunay and yours truly to the said conference, subject to the vailability of funds.

INBOX. We got this observation through the e-mail about the Pacquiao-Morales boxing bout coverage last Sunday from one Raul Arellano with e-mail address at raul.arellano50@yahoo.com: "I am so disappointed with the Solar Sports coverage of the Pacquiao-Morales fight today. I watched it live in one of the cinemas in Metro-Manila. I paid P600 for it. During the pre-bout (Torres vs Arnoutis), I was so annoyed by the two "sportscasters" when they began greeting friends, relatives, officemates, bosses, politicians, etc on the air. This triggered more greetings as more people texted the "sportscasters" to greet them (which the "textcasters" did, in real-time).

This did not occur in a few seconds or minutes but almost the whole fight. Imagine yourself in front of a cinema big screen watching a boxing match and all you hear loudly through the cinema speaker system is all nonsense, garbage! They claim they are sportscasters but they won't even pass for a daily talk show. I paid for my ticket for the coverage and I expect more professional coverage. They cannot say I paid for the Pacquiao-Morales fight only and the pre-bouts I am watching are all free (so I should live with the poor quality reporting?). I lived in the US for years and I know that fees for PPV includes pre-fights and the main event.

The whole coverage should be with quality reporting. I am sure most of the ones who watched the coverage, boxing fans, sports fans and the general public are so disappointed, me included. I think Solar Sports should make an apology to all us who watched and paid for the coverage. They should do something to the "sportscasters" too, like fire them and make sure this does not happen again."

We also got another e-mail from the former Jiji Apalisok who is now Mrs. Charles Leggington. She is extending her regards to some colleagues in the media.

Thus: "My best regards to all the guys at DYRD... Atoy Cosap, Bob Galero, Willie Maestrado, Ven Arigo, and Danny Reyes. Regards too to Peter Dejaresco. I miss you all. By the way, election is just around the corner ha. Bibo na ang taga Media. When it's election time... it's happy days for the Media people."

Her e-mail ad is giselamayapalisok@yahoo.com
