After
two years of hard work and torture in Syria, a Boholana overseas Filipino worker
(OFW) returned home two weeks ago and was hospitalized in Manila and died on Tuesday,
not seeing again her two kids and an abandoning husband.
Zeny
Cenerpida Melencion, 44, of Danao town, was diagnosed for lung cancer but died
of brain damage after being maltreated by her employer, her sister Myrna said.
She
died at the house of her bro-ther Reynaldo in Manila just seconds after the arrival
of her two kids, Kerwin, 10, and Castine, 8, last Oct. 31.

father Marcelino also witnessed her last struggle and final moment. She
had not spoken to her children even as they gathered by her death bed.
Beyond
treatment, the doctors at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) had earlier decided
to discharge her. Zeny
left Danao for Syria two years ago to work as a domestic helper, hoping that her
children's future might be secured by her employment abroad. Her
husband, only identified by her sister as Jun, abandoned Zeny and their children
while they then stayed in Manila years back. He is reportedly not a Boholano. |
Her
recruitment agency had her worked for a number of employers in Syria, until one
of them maltreated her.
Her
brutal employer returned Zeny to her Syrian recruiter over a month before she
was rescued by the officials of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
But
in the office of her recruiter, Zeny was allegedly not given food, apart from
her being mauled and treated like a prisoner.
One
of her previous employers, who is now in the United States, contacted the OWWA
office in Syria to rescue her.
OWWA
officials facilitated her return to Manila.
She
reportedly had a cancer, which accordingly become "fatally malignant"
after her head was banged against a wall by her cruel employer. Her sister could
not give details of her supposed illness and the brain damage complicating it.
She was admitted to the PGH for almost two weeks after arriving in the country.
OWWA
officials in Manila contacted the municipal officials in Danao and asked the latter
to inform her family.
Rep.
Edgar Chatto's office in Manila assisted in the hospitalization.
Zeny's
remains are scheduled to arrive by plane here this afternoon. (VCA) |
