LET'S GO BOOM BOOM!

The 10th Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tagbilaran led by Vice Mayor Jose Antonio S. Veloso passed during its regular session last Wednesday morning a resolution sponsored en masse vehemently objecting the power rate increase application of Bohol Light Co. under the guise of complying with the provisions of Republic Act 9136 otherwise known as the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA).

Another resolution was passed, also en masse, authorizing the appearance of City Legal Officer Doni D. Piquero during the scheduled public hearing last Wednesday afternoon.

However, we learned that the Energy Regulatory Board (ERB) already approved the provisional rate increase of Bohol Light by 25 centavos per kilowatt hour.

The race for the presidency of the Philippine Councilors League in Bohol is heating up through a three-cornered fight between re-electionist PCL Pres. Boy Imboy, Garcia-Hernandez Kagawad Tita Gallentes and yours truly.

Imboy and Gallentes, perceived to be the moneyed PCL presidential bets, are considered as the frontrunners while yours truly, the underdog.

We had a chance encounter with Gallentes during the special session of the Sangguniang Bayan of Antequera last Thursday. There, we Gallentes that we both do have a common political nemesis in the PCL presidential elections: Imboy and his "lucky charm," Mayor Mae Imboy of Loay. In fact, in our town sorties, we told our fellow councilors to vote for Gallentes if our bid is unacceptable to them. We are happy though that Gallentes is returning the same compliment.

The world for Boholano boxing aficionados will stand still this morning as our very own boxing sensation, Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista challenges Daniel Ponce de Leon for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight crown at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.

For the second time in two months, City Mayor Dan Neri Lim went to the United States in order not to miss the major boxing event and extend his moral support not only to Bautista but also to AJ "Bazooka Banal who takes on a new foe, Jorge Cardenas in a non-title 6-round match. Both Bautista and Banal are adopted sons of Tagbilaran.

Earlier, the city mayor made whirlwind trip to the US to boost the morale of Czar Amonsot who tried, but failed, to wrest the championship belt from Michael Katsidis.

In yesterday's official weigh-in at the Arden Fair Mall, both Bautista and de Leon easily made weight in only their first try at the scales. De Leon weighed in at 121.6 lbs, while Bautista checked in at 121.4 lbs.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Mayor Lim were present during the weigh-in. Manny Pacquiao was a no-show while Juan Manuel Marquez gamely posed with his fans. Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera are set to fight on Oct. 6 at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, Nevada for the WBC International Super Featherweight title.

Today's boxing event will also feature Gerry Penalosa against Johnny Gonzales for the WBO Bantamweight title.

It is interesting to note that Boom Boom at 21, challenges Ponce de Leon, who was Penalosa's last foe in the WBO super bantamweight crown.

The Bautista-De Leon bout will be a proverbial battle of youth versus experience with Bautista having the edge. In the Penalosa-De Leon match last March, De Leon was not the typical punch-resistant fighter especially in the last three rounds as the supposed Mexican warrior morphed into an African runner by sprinting away from Penalosa's attacks.

With coach Freddie Roach focusing on the defense of an offensive-minded Bautista in their alliance at the famed Wild Card Gym, we expect the spirit of De Leon's great, great grandfather who is an Indian warrior many generations ago paying homage to Bohol's great hero Dagohoy.
