It
was perhaps the thinking of Antonio Trillanes III that the
11 million voters who backed his senatorial bid last May,
or even half of it, would support his cause to overthrow the
duly constituted government last Thursday.
With
only renegade Gen. Danilo Lim from the Armed Forces openly
on his side, Trillanes dared the stability of the Arroyo government
counting on the support of the ailing former Vice Pres. Teofisto
Guingona and the civil society groups which opted to stay
at the sidelines during the Makati standoff.
The
half-hazard mutiny should serve a lesson for the government
to use the full force of the law against military adventurists
and fascist ideologues like Trillanes and his gang.

As
sure as the sun rises tomorrow, opposition figures will challenge
before the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Palace
order imposing curfew last Thursday night to the early Friday
morning in some parts of Metro Manila including Makati City.
The
curfew was lifted last Friday making the issue moot and academic.
We
are of the considered opinion that the High Tribunal may not
refuse to address the constitutionality issue of the curfew
invoking its symbolic function under the power of judicial
review to determine whether or not there is a grave abuse
of discretion amounting to lack or excess of jurisdiction
in all branches, instrumentalities and agencies of the government
including the Office of the President.

The
mass oath-taking of newly-elected SK and barangay officials
in the city last Friday at JJ's Seafood Village saw the two
main protagonists in the 2004 city mayoralty elections in
the best of everything.
In
her farewell speech as city Liga ng Mga Barangay president,
Betty Torralba, had all the kind words for City Mayor Dan
Neri Lim, her mayoralty opponent in 2004. Lim also returned
the compliment and even hinted at appointing Torralba as her
new consultant on barangay affairs. The city mayor also announced
of getting two former punong barangays, Segundina Botero of
Ubujan and Yuso Claro of Manga to the city hall.
Their
kind gestures last Friday typify the maxim that all's well
that ends well.

During
the affair last Friday, Glorivic Yap-dela Serna of Poblacion
II also took her oath before Mayor Lim as the acting Liga
ng mga Barangay president while the new set of punong barangays
in the city are yet to elect their new president on Dec. 11.
Not
a few were also mesmerized seeing dela Serna taking her oath
before the city mayor despite the verbal tussles they had
in the past.
Meanwhile,
Faro Cabalit of Taloto emerged as the strongest contender
to replace Torralba in the city council. Reports said ten
out of 15 punong barangays in the city already sealed their
support for Cabalit. The ten punong barangays are all identified
with the camp of Mayor Lim.
