Cabalit wins
city ABC prexy

Three-term Taloto barangay captain Faro Cabalit handily sealed his victory in yesterday's election for the presidency of the city's Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) held at the Metrocenter Hotel.

Mustering the votes of all barangay captains allied with City Mayor Dan Lim, the new ABC president garnered 10 votes against his opponent three-term Poblacion-2 barangay chair Glorivic Yap Dela Serna who obtained 5 votes.

Cabalit, who came off a failed third bid for the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) during last May's polls, expressed excitement of serving once again at the SP as one of its ex officio members.

50 YEARS AFTER
DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

 

On December 10, 1948, the world through the United Nations, started the celebration of the "International Human Rights Day."

Close to 50 years after last Monday, we observed the tattered flag of such declaration in the saga of the 55 farmers of Sumilao, Bukidnon, who are now trying to assert their "right of property."

For close to two months since October 10, 2007, the farmers marched from Mindanao to the streets of Manila to dramatize their plight over a 144-hectare piece of land that they used to own. They used to own the land through Certificates of Land Ownership (CLOA) but surrendered their rights after the group of the Quisumbings applied for conversion of the rich farm land into an industrial estate.

Just Before Deadline
'08 budget OKd; OMB gets none

The Senate yesterday approved on third and final reading the proposed P1.227 trillion General Appropriations Act for 2008.

Meanwhile, the Optical Media Board headed by actor and television host Edu Manzano was given "zero budget" for next year amid the ongoing word war between him and Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr.

Following the Senate's approval, the budget bill will go through the bicameral conference committee for deliberations today.
