Pres. Garcia home
gets rehab funding

ALL FOR CPG. The move to restore the city residence of the late Pres. Carlos P. Garcia kicks off with the arrival and meeting of officials of the Bohol Association of Metro Manila, Inc.(BA MMI() last Friday. During a press conference at Villa Alzhun Inn & Restaurant, (l-r) Project Director Joseph Rañola, BAMMI chair Purita Soliven and former Pres. Tita Lapiz explain to the media the rationale of the project dubbed as "Preserve Pres. Carlos P. Garcia's Heritage: Save a Museum."
-----------------------------------------------------------

The ancestral home in the city of the late Pres. Carlos P. Garcia will soon be fully rehabilitated to make it presentable as a "respected residence" of Bohol's most illustrious son who became the fourth president of the Republic and first president of the 1971 Constitutional Convention.

The two-storey Garcia residence situated along Hontanosas Street, this city, was converted as "Bohol Museum" in 1981 by the provincial government. However, since the museum has moved to the Provincial Library near the Capitol building, the CPG ancestral home was viewed to be in its prime to be reverted back as the "home of the Boholano president."

The Bohol Association of Metro Manila, Inc. (BAMMI) under realtor-civic leader Purita Soliven and lawyer Bernie Calibo, as chair and president, respectively, initiated the project dubbed as "Preserve President Carlos P. Garcia's Heritage: Save a Museum."

The project envisions to restore the President's home and his memorabilia as works are expected to commence momentarily for the repair of the existing building, according to project Director Joseph Rañola who arrived here last Friday together with other BAMMI officials.

The visit last Friday likewise confirmed the agreement with the Provincial Tourism Council (PTC) chaired by Peter Dejaresco and Prov'l Kagawad Corazon Galbreath to assist in the restoration work of the CPG Home here.

During the preliminary meeting last Friday at Villa Alzhun Inn & Restaurant, Herman Torrero, a known architect identified with the National Commission on Culture & Arts (NCCA) was endorsed by the PTC to handle the restoration work.

The BAMMI and PTC officials immediately inspected the house which was recently taken over by the Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Foundation, Inc. based in Manila.

Arch't. Torrero said that he is excited and challenged to be given the confidence to work on the restoration of the ancestral home of a President. He will submit shortly his recommendations on how to start off the restoration work.

It is noteworthy that Bohol needs a place where the "Boholano pride of having produced a president can be enshrined."

A second pledging session was held at the Bohol Cultural Center, this city last night initiated by the provincial and city governments. It generated some P1 million together with the pledges of Representatives Edgar Chatto, Roberto Cajes and Eladio Jala while the private sector donated P350,000 (paid at P10,000 per donor).

The first pledging session was held in Manila last Nov. 4 during the birth anniversary of Pres Garcia where some P1.5 million was generated to finance the restoration work.

"The CPG Home once rehabilitated can be part of the tour for tourists visiting the province," the PTC chair assured as there remains a need to have places for tourists to visit within the city citing that there is no "City Tour" so to speak until this time.
