Nat'l Arts month in full swing

The Province of Bohol has never been so active in the arts than this February, the month nationally declared to be devoted to the arts. With this year's theme tagged as ANI NG SINING YAMAN NG LAHI, the various sections and committees of the Bohol Arts and Cultural Heritage Council are spearheading various cultural activities in coordination with CCAD, the Center for Culture and Arts Development of the Office of the Governor and with the City Arts and Culture Council of the City Government of Tagbilaran Office of the City Mayor. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts is a leading supporter in collaboration with Globe Telecom, Ayala Foundation, ICM Mall, BQ Mall, and other local partners.

The celebration kicked off with a colorful parade last February 3 from the Bohol Cultural Center to Plaza Rizal, where the public was feted with dances and songs capped by an inspirational speech by artist Justice Magdangal de Leon. He expounded on the theme by elucidating on the dignity and self-image of the Filipino.

The CCAD in cooperation with the President Carlos P. Garcia Foundation organized a Dinner for a Cause for the preservation of the late beloved President Garcia's house/museum and his family memorabilia lat February 10.

Various competitions on the arts are currently in full swing: a Pop Band Original Song Competition for Amateur/High School and Professional/College categories (BACH Council Music Committee); a Kundiman Singing contest (BACH Music Committee); a drama interpretation contest among high schools, colleges and municipalities (BACH Drama Committee); a dance theatre choreography contest on Boholano folklore for colleges and high schools (BACH Dance Committee); and a comicbook illustration contest on Boholano folklore (BACH Visual Arts Committee).

Other exciting projects also dot this month for love and the arts. The BACH Literature Committee has been conducting creative story telling sessions with pre-school children in the city's day care centers utilizing puppetry to illustrate Bohol legends and folk stories. It also mounted an interactive poetry session last February 14 in the evening of Valentine's Day at the Plaza Rizal. The Visual Arts Committee is conducting workshops on Painting on Indigenous materials every Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the Sitio Ubos Pavillion in front of the Casa Suarez Museum.

A Photography Exhibit will be opened today at the ICM Mall at 3:00 pm organized by the BACH Photography Committee. The BACH Drama Committee has mounted Alfred Valenzona's one-act play on ancestral houses entitled KARAANG BALAY, which was a hit in the recently concluded NCCA National University Theater Festival in Ilo-ilo, and is up sponsorship for a Bohol provincial tour.

The semifinals for the bands and kundiman contest will be held at the ICM Mall on February 24 and 25, while for the dance and drama contests at the BQ Atrium on February 26 and 27. The Grand Finals and Culminating Activity for the National Arts Month will be held at the Dauis Convent Churchyard on March 2 at 7:00 pm. For more information please contact Mrs. Enriqueta Butalid, BACH Council Executive Director and CCAD Head, at the CCAD Office, telephone number 501-9287, or Lutgardo Labad, BACH Council Chairperson, at 0917-306-1100.
