Madrigal concert set

Once again, boholano lovers of music will be treated to an evening of world-class music-making when the country's topnotch choral group, The Philippine Madrigal Singers, will visit Tagbilaran City on Monday, March 5, 2007 at Holy Name University Gym.

First organized in 1963 by UP Professor Andrea O. Veneracion, the choral group has since distinguished itself with its unique singing style, touring practically all corners of the world and winning prizes in competitions they entered. In fact, The Philippine Madrigal Singers is today considered Asia's most awarded singing group, having constantly won all the top prizes in such prestigious choral competitions as Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Miezesdroje in Poland, Marktoberdorf in Germany, Spittal in Austria, Neuchatal in Switzerland, Tours in France, Varna in Bulgaria, Debrecen in Hungary and Tolosa in Spain, to name a few.

On June 4, 2006 the Philippine Madrigal Singers once again proved its mettle when it won the Grand Prize in the Florilege Vocal de Tours in France, besting 14 other choirs from different parts of the world. Moreover, the group also bagged in the same contest the Grand Prix de Ville de Tours, an award given to the choir who gave the best overall performance during the entire competition.

Fresh from this most recent achievement, the Philippine Madrigal Singers are presently undergoing a national outreach concert tour as a way of sharing to music-lovers in the provinces a sampling of the vocal finesse that earned for our fellow citizens another doze of pride and sense of nationalism, this time in the field of culture. Their concert tour is under the auspieces of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Outreach and Exchange Program. Holy Name University Office of Cultural Affairs and Development serves as the concert's local venue sponsor.

The Philippine Madrigal Concert on March 5 is entitled MADZITAWANAN, underscoring the fact that the group's repertoire, in contrast to previous Madrigal performances here, will feature light choral music that would surely spell fun and high-end entertainment for the audience. Tickets for the concert are available at HNU-OCAD and other designated outlets at affordable prizes.
