"Eskaya" commits to check on complaints

The complaints on alleged environmental violations lodged against the construction of the high-end Eskaya Resort will be tackled by its management within the next two weeks.

This was agreed during a technical conference presided by Regional Director Alan C. Aranguez at the DENR regional offices in Cebu City last Friday.

The resort, represented by its legal counsel Benjamin Negapatan and Ireneo Corales agreed in writing that the resort management will look into the complainants' call not to remove stones and seaweeds from the seabed area, to allow access to the sea and EPZ and the call to remove blockade/obstruction to the sea, including the fence blocking the lot of Delfin Bonga.

Director Aranguez told the conferees that the meeting was convened in order to act on the complaints which were validated during the conference. In fact, Aranguez asked the resort representatives to put into writing their commitments on the "action to be taken regarding the complaints."

Corales, the liason officer of the resort agreed that a meeting be called within two weeks with the concerned parties.

"A resolution to the concerns will be done within a month," stated the signed commitment which assured that the DENR, the LGU and the complainants as well be provided with a written report.

It was also stressed during the technical conference that "with or without the barangay road, the resort will allow access to the sea and the EPZ." This was also assured as a course of action by Nestor M. Canda, EMB-7 in the province who also attended the conference. Other attendees were Alden Paco, EMB-7, Delfin Bonga, spokesman of the complainants and the Chronicle associate editor.

The DENR director said that he would expect compliance of the commitment signed by the resort representatives.
