NEDA to LGUs: Maximize IRA

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) is urging local chief executives in the province to maximize the utilization of their internal revenue allotments (IRA) to achieve the Philippines' Millennium Development Goals on top of which is the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

This was the call issued by NEDA Development Information Director Benjamin Turiano during the agency's progress report in coordination with the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) held at the Bohol Beach Club yesterday.

Meantime, the International Press Institute (representing media as the fourth pillar of democracy) classified the Philippines as the second most dangerous country for journalists in the world, next to war-torn Iraq. It was set to recently edit a documentary on media killings in the Philippines.

Just Before Deadline
Power rates cut nationwide

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced yesterday that it had ordered the state-owned National Power Corp. to reduce its rates by as much as 31.5 centavos per kilowatt hour, more than a month into the campaign for the senatorial elections.

Consumers -- whether residential, commercial or industrial -- in the Visayas will benefit from the largest rate cut of 31.5 centavos while those in Luzon and Mindanao will have 4.3 centavos and 4.5 centavos reductions, respectively.
