Hanjin concern
on drainage issue

The contractor of the multi-million major drainage project in the city expressed concern on the cleanliness of the run-off water which will be flushed out to the seawaters off Tagbilaran Bay once the project is completed by March this year.

Project Manager Chong Do Lee of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Ltd. said that while they are contracted to finish the drainage project about two months from now, he is also aware of the illegal tapping of sewerage disposal from various business firms and houses into the ongoing drainage project.

He appealed to the city and provincial governments to be strict in disconnecting the tapping in order to keep the drainage from contaminants, citing that this project was designed to be the main outlet of the city's "run-off" water, mostly rainwater.

The project manager strongly recommended that a water treatment facility be put up by the local government concerned to ensure that the water flushed out to the Tagbilaran bay will remain clean.

The statement of the Hanjin executive came during a meeting called by the Provincial Tourism Council (PTC) yesterday at the Capitol.

He cited the need of the water treatment facility since he sensed that it might be difficult for the LGUs to completely disconnect all the tapping from the private firms.

Engr. Moises Millanar, of the city government, who was also invited to attend the PTC meeting admitted on the need for a water treatment facility

He assured that City Mayor Dan Lim is much concerned of this drainage issue. In fact, together with the mayor, they visited the water treatment facilities of the Cebu Country Club and MEPZA Export zone in Mactan, Cebu, all done by a company he identified as Mactan Rock.

Engr. Millanar told the tourism council that there is now a request for a memorandum of agreement with the Cebu-based firm to conduct a feasibility study prior the work for the said treatment facility.

Asked on the timetable, Millanar said that the study can be completed in a month while the construction of the facility will take another month. The estimate of the project can be known after the feasibility study is conducted, he said.

Millanar assured that another check on the illegal connections will be done once the contractor will schedule the "clearing of the project."

It maybe noted that some 36 establishments were listed to have their sewerage connected with the existing drainage project, including that of the provincial capitol building.

Meanwhile, Engr. Yolanda Yu, chief of the general services office of the provincial government yesterday bared that the water treatment facility at the capitol was ordered fast tracked by Gov. Erico Aumentado to ensure that the water coming out from the Capitol building to the drainage will be clean.

The meeting presided by PTC Chair Peter Dejaresco was also attended by PTC co-chairpersons Provl Kagawad Corazon Galbreath, (gov't sector); Jun Caturza (private sector); RG Ong, Nonet Bolo, Provincial Tourism Officer Baby Balio and Jo Remolador, PTC secretary.

Ae Damalerio of the office of Rep. Edgar Chatto likewise attended the meeting together with Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan since yesterday's meeting likewise discussed concerns at the Loboc river cruise.
