Fonacier urges hoteliers to
become "pressure group"

Owners of hotels, resorts and restaurants hold a major role in improving the tourism landscape in the province by becoming a "pressure group" for governance to be more responsive to the clamor of the tourism industry here.

This call was echoed by lawyer Anos Fonacier of Bohol Beach Club who spoke before property owners during the induction of the 2007 officers of the Bohol Association of Hotels, Resorts & Restaurants (BAHRR) last Wednesday.

He cited the need to fine tune the promotional direction of the province which can be translated in a concerted effort of both the private and government sectors. He admitted that the province is fortunate to have leaders who believe on the tourism potentials of the province while citing that the post held by Rep. Edgar Chatto as chair of the House committee on tourism is a "rare privilege" which came timely when the province soared high to become one of the country's top destination.

Fonacier who is a "Father of Tourism" awardee of both the Department of Tourism and the provincial government, rallied the hoteliers to come up with their priority concerns on how to further promote tourism in the province.

The province should likewise maintain the image as a "clean and green" destination as compared to other places in the country. He said .

The lawyer-hotelier sees the need to come up with uniform signages for tourist destinations in the province which can be mounted along the highway in order to give more prominence to the destinations.

As a tourism prime mover in the province, Fonacier expounded on his advocacy to help promote the entire industry, including those properties which can hardly afford to do their own marketing efforts outside the province.

"The big players in the industry can always spearhead in generating funds to assist in promoting these properties," while citing that "promoting a resort or hotel is just like promoting the entire province as a destination."

For his part, former BAHRR president Mario Uy of Miravilla Resort thanked the association members for their cooperation during his administration. It maybe noted that Uy reactivated BAHRR some two years ago. He initiated the promotional efforts of the group through an updated directory of hotels, resorts and restaurants while spearheading the group in actively participating in various tourism confab.

Inducted by Fonacier were Jun Caturza, president; lawyer Doy Nunag, executive vice president; Mario Uy, immediate past president; RG Ong, VP-hotels; John Yap, VP-resorts; Jose Manlupig, VP-restaurants; Judith Bomediano, secretary; Ethel Bonite, asst secretary; Pamela Gallardo, treasurer; Wea Guiterrez, asst. treasurer; Vicky Wallace, auditor; Blessie Bollozos, asst. auditor; Karen Guiroy and Cecil Camba, PROs, Walter Lim and Limuel Loren, business managers.
