Latest Comelec
count now 7-3-2

MANILA. Three days of a consistent trend landing eight opposition bets among the top 12 senatorial candidates ended last night when the continuation of the national canvass changed the ratio to 7-3-2, dropping one from the opposition for a candidate of Team Unity (TU).

Replacing the Genuine Opposition's Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III in 12th spot was Miguel Zubiri, among TU candidates who received strong support from voters in Cebu City and Cebu province, known administration bailiwicks.

Loren Legarda, Francis "Chiz" Escudero, Manuel Villar, Panfilo Lacson, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV of the Genuine Opposition remained within the top 12 along with independents Francis Pangilinan and Gregorio Honasan.

Pimentel was pulled down to Zubiri's former slot at No. 14, losing his place by almost 81,000 votes to the Bukidnon Representative.

Zubiri's return to the top 12 was a first since he placed 10th in the Commission on Elections count on May 21.

Vote-rich Cebu, where more than 1.3 million voters favored most Team Unity candidates in the polls, also fixed Edgardo Angara and Joker Arroyo in their slots at seventh and eighth, respectively.

Cebu lived up to its name as an administration bailiwick as totaled votes from separate Certificates of Canvass from Cebu province and Cebu City had seven TU candidates in the top 12, four from GO, and independent Pangilinan at No. 1.

The Cebu canvass had Arroyo in second and Angara in fourth, while current non-placers in the top 12 of the national canvass, Prospero Pichay, Mike Defensor, Ralph Recto and Cesar Montano were third, fifth, eighth and 12th respectively.

Vicente Magsaysay was 14th, John Osmeña, TU's Cebuano candidate, ranked 15th, while Vicente Sotto III and Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson were further behind at 17th and 18th. Farther down were Tessie Aquino-Oreta at No. 21 and Jamalul Kiram was 24th.

Leaders in the national tally, first placer Legarda and runner-up Escudero, were ninth and 10th in Cebu.

The opposition's placers in the national count were also out for Cebuanos, including the opposition's Lacson, who placed 13th, Pimentel at 16th place, Cayetano, Honasan and Trillanes.
