Comelec slams poll
cheating allegations

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will try to disprove allegations that massive cheating will take place in Monday's polls where some 661,001 registered voters will troop to 3,265 precincts to elect local and national officials.

This, even as the Comelec-PNP Regional Election Joint Command has confirmed reports that vote-buying has started as early as Thursday in some Bohol towns.

US Peace Corps
sends fresh batch

WASHINGTON D.C. A fresh batch of US Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Manila today, a little over a month after the murder of Peace Corps volunteer Julia Campbell in Ifugao province, and in time for them to witness first-hand the country's midterm elections.

Philippine Consul-General Ding Nolasco said they issued non-immigrant visas to 65 Peace Corps volunteers, keeping the consular office open until eight in the evening to accommodate the group.

"This shows the United States' continued commitment to help the Philippines," Nolasco averred.

  Bishop Medroso appeals for clean, honest election

Bishop Leonardo Medroso of the Diocese of Tagbilaran has made an appeal to Boholano voters and candidates alike to ensure the holding of clean, honest and credible elections.

In a message aired over dyRD and dyZD, member stations of the Catholic Media Network, the prelate asked electors to "pause and reflect for just one minute, to make up [your] minds and to decide for the future of our nation and the Filipino people."

MANILA. What would have happened if the Germans conquered the Philippines a hundred years ago?

The new two-volume book, Philippine-German Relations: A Modern History, 1834-2000, by a Boholano scholar, Monsignor Hermógenes E. Bacareza, SVD, answers the question with one word: discipline. The corruption, scandals, crimes and unbridled politics might have been less conspicuous and more controlled by the German system, which adopts love of order and discipline not only in individual lives but also in government circles.

Philippine - Bohol - elections are flawed. Are we doing something about it?

Vote-buying has been the order of the day - because the opponents are doing the same. Elections then

become expensive - and public office, rather than becoming a public trust - becomes an instrument to hasten the return on "election investment."

Corruption, therefore, abounds and we all have become the poorer for it - except the pompous politicians and their private sector contractors and suppliers. This analysis has been beaten to death yet what have we seen?
