Priests should not be
alternatives in politics

 

The people needs an alternative to run against traditional politicians, but, it should not be the priests, stressed Bishop Leonardo Medroso of the Diocese of Tagbilaran yesterday.

He issued the statement in reaction to the election of Fr. Ed Panlilio who got elected as the new governor of Pampanga after he bested two strong political figures.

Medroso said that the victory of Fr. Panlilio gives the signal that "people are hungry for alternative candidates whose charisma beats even the most popular and powerful politician."

GOVERNOR "FATHER" PANLILIO
 

It could be ominous that in Pampanga, home province of GMA, a reluctant "man of the cloth," Father Ed Panlilio - won the top secular post Governor - against the president's two candidates: one a quarry prince, the other a jueteng queen.

Even if the winning margin was by a whisker, the brave people of Pampanga, chose the clear moral alternative to incumbent governor - actor Mark Lapid (whose family regime cannot allegedly account for P500 million of quarry payments) and Board Member Lilia Pineda, whose husband (Bong) is largely known as Central Luzon's jueteng king.

Protest against political
slays greets GMA in Japan


JAPAN. Human rights groups based here gathered for a candle light protest in front of the Philippine embassy in Tokyo yesterday to protest the hundreds of execution-style killings carried out in the Philippines and demanded that the perpetrators be punished.

Offering flowers and putting up pictures of the many victims suspected political killings, the protestors called on Japan to push visiting Philippine President Arroyo on human rights issues.
