Banal: Country's
next boxing star

BANAL

The manager of emerging boxing wonder AJ "Bazooka" Banal is perplexed with the way the teenage fighter is creating remarkable buzz this early.

Michael Aldeguer admits they are still about to start to thrust Banal into the limelight considering that their fighter is only 18, but scouting reports appear to have beaten them to it.

"We're really surprised people are already talking about a world title shot for Banal. Actually we still have to plan a card where Banal will be the main eventer," said Aldeguer, son of famed Cebu boxing benefactor Tony Aldeguer of ALA Boxing.

"AJ Banal is definitely a future headliner of a big boxing card next year. His exceptional skills as a boxer, his style and grace and superb IQ for the game will attract many promoters to make AJ a main star," said fight promoter and Third Force Promotions head Noli Eala.

Banal will go back into the ring against Mexican Jovanny Soto on Dec. 2 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Banal-Soto clash will serve as the supporting bout of the "Payback" card headlined by another young prospect Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista in a defense of his WBO Intercontinental superbantamweight belt against Mexican southpaw Antonio "Barrio" Meza.

Banal turned professional in 2005 against Sonny Saguing, a less capable but cunning fighter who survived the skirmish with a draw and a big cut in Banal's brow due to an unintentional head butt.

Banal, now based in Cebu, has since won his next 15 fights, stopping 12 of them.

For two years, Banal campaigned at home and kept his record unblemished with outstanding wins over OPBF highly ranked Ali Rochmad and Angky Angota of Indonesia and Kaurith 3K Battery of Thailand.
