Holy
Name University was the proud host institution of the 380
delegates from all over the country and foreign guests and
speakers from South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, India and Italy
for a three-day convention of the 9th SPVM (Samahang Pisika
ng Visayas at Mindanao National Physics Conference and Workshop
and 1st Asian Regional High Energy Physics Meeting, Oct. 25
to 27.
The
opening on day one had Mayor Dan Neri Lim welcome guests and
other participants. Fr. Ernesto M. Lagura, SVD, president
of Holy Name University also gave his welcome address on behalf
of HNU administration and employees, and Dr. Rosario Reserva
on behalf of SPVM organizers. Keynote speaker at the opening
ceremony was the Ambassador of Italy, Rubens Anna Fedele.
The opening ceremony was also highlighted with the HNU parade
of colors and the Diwanag pre-anthem dance performance.
Relevant
topics which included "Asian Hi-Energy Physics from Korea
and Hi-Tech Industry," "Functional Physics Curriculum
in High School," Radiation and Life" were discussed
in the plenary sessions while "Theoretical and Computational
Physics," "Material Science and Photonics,"
and "Physics Concepts and Demonstrations" were discussed,
demonstrated in the different sub-plenary sessions by different
foreign and local speakers.
All
plenary sessions were held in the New Alumni AVR of the New
CAS building at Janssen Heights and the sub-plenary sessions
were all done in the second level classrooms of the same venue.
It was very impressive and interesting to note how these physicists
reacted, asked questions and expressed their new learning
about Physics and its role in life.

In
the evening of the same day, a conference banquet was
held at the Bohol Tropics Sandugo Grand Ballroom courtesy
of the Gov. Erico Aumentado who was the guest of honor.
The governor was represented in his message by Provincial
Administrator Tomas Abapo, Jr. The VP for academic affairs,
Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD gave the opening and welcome
message. It was also a night of fun from the HNU Diwanag
Cultural Troupe who entertained the guests with the
Boholano cultural and traditional dances.
The
MSU-IIT Physics major students facilitated the Physics
Olympics among the participants at the end of the program.

Early
on the third day, October 27, the closing ceremony was highlighted
with the distribution of certificates of participation and
appreciation and awards for the Physics Posters contest. After
the closing ceremony, all guests and participants went off
for a tour. They were in 7 buses to see for themselves a live
Tarsier at Loboc and the river cruise, the Chocolate Hills,
the Sandugo Blood Compact Site and the Baclayon Church.
We
know they carried with them the memorable experience they
got from Bohol.
Impressions
from the speakers, organizers and participants were expressed
during the awarding; and impressions were very good ranging
from the organized schedules, the venue, the food and generally
the Boholano people. The warmth and hospitability shown to
the guests were impressive. To the HNU administration who
gave their full support, our deepest gratitude.
This
year's 2006-2007 SPVM Officers are Prof. Rosario L. Reserva,
president; Dr. Jinky B. Bornales, president-elect; Prof. Editha
P. Jacosalem, vice- president; Christine Joy Graceeno, Secretary;
Leo Cristobal C. Ambolode II, treasurer; Prof. Jingle B. Magallanes,
auditor; Prof Lolita D. Ungui, consultant for national affairs
and Dr. Hitoshi Mijata, consultant for international affairs.
This
year's SPVM convention director is Engr. Juliet M. Espiritu
and the steering committee chair is Dr. Estrellita P. Sajulan
for Bohol group and co-chaired by Prof. Rosario L. Reserva
for MSU-IIT group.
Next
year, the National SPVM will be in Baguio with St. Louis University
of Baguio City as the host institution. All the physicists
in attendance are excited to go to Baguio next year.
