captain shot dead

A re-electionist barangay captain here was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman riding in tandem a motorcycle 2 p.m. Sunday.

The victim, identified as Ramon Autida y Boncales, 30, the incumbent barangay captain of Camili-an, Ubay, was plying the national highway in barangay Lumangog aboard a motorcycle when the bonnet wearing tandem bikers drove by and gunned him down.

Autida was hit on the neck and fell off his motorcycle.

Newly ordained Bishop Crispin "Bai" Varquez receives a rousing welcome from his town mates in Sevilla, Bohol during last Sunday's "homecoming of a church leader" to the quiet interior town. Bishop Varquez, 47, officiated his thanksgiving mass the day after his ordination as bishop. He is the 16th Boholano bishop.

The Bomb Theory in the Glorietta 2 Friday explosion that claimed 11 lives and 130 wounded turned out to be a dud.

Explosive experts concluded Tuesday that the explosion was caused by a gas leak under the basement of Glorietta 2, one of the country's plushiest malls owned by the Ayala group, considered by Forbes Magazine as the "richest family name" in the Philippines.

The Bomb scare went ppffftt as the existence of RDX a component of C4 bomb was discounted in favor of a thesis on an LPG and diesel gas explosion.

Palace appeals; Chavit threatens to bolt

MANILA. Malacañang urged parties who are strongly against the granting of pardon to former president Joseph Estrada to keep their cool even as former Ilocos Sur governor Luis "Chavit" Singson threatened to cut ties with the administration.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Sergio Apostol said critics need not be upset since the former leader is still in the process of applying for a pardon.
