Vote buy, "kidnapping"

Vote-buying and "abduction of voters" has marred tomorrow's holding of barangay and sangguniang kabataan (SK) elections.

Meanwhile, a re-electionist barangay captain in Camili-an Ubay town was shot dead by unidentified tandem motorcycle riders. (See related story)

Some 30,000 candidates will be vying for a total of 17,744 barangay and SK posts, records of the Office of the Provincial Election Supervisor show.

Judge sacked for immorality

A municipal trial court judge was dismissed by the Supreme Court (SC) for making sexual advances and committing lascivious acts against two women in a public place.

The high tribunal, in an en banc ruling, found Judge Manuel de Castro of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court (MCTC) of Jagna and Garcia-Hernandez, guilty of gross misconduct and immorality.

PARDON MAKES "ERAP" KING

 

It can be said that GMA may have won the battle, but Erap won the war.

When President GMA granted Executive Clemency (Pardon) to

convicted plunderer former President Erap Estrada, ordinary folks thought Erap yielded to the power of the Presidency. On the contrary.


As we know, in spiritual and mortal terms, pardon (as in the confessional) can only be given if the applicant (a) admits the guilt (b) feels remorse over the deed (c) makes restitution or restoration (d) and promises not to repeat the offense.

Oil firms hike prices
by 50¢ per liter


MANILA. As world oil prices hit a record $90 per barrel, local oil firms decided to raise pump prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene by 50 centavos a liter and liquefied petroleum gas prices by 56 centavos a kilogram, inclusive of the 12-percent value-added tax.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. started the round of price hikes at 12:01 a.m. yesterday, followed by Petron Corp. and Total Phil. at 6 a.m. and Chevron Phil. at noon.
