"Choco" to 8th in
global tilt

By KIT BAGAIPO

Chocolate Hills may well be into its way of being recognized as one of the world's Seven New Wonders of Nature.

Latest global online polls show that Chocolate Hills is consistently improving its position, from the 17th place last week to 8th place as of presstime last night.

A month ago, the world famous hills was only in the 78th position, way behind Tubbataha Reef, another Philippine site being nominated into the global search for New 7 Wonders of Nature, a campaign organized by the non-profit New7Wonders Foundation.

As of latest poll, Tubbataha is on the 9th spot while the third Philippine site nominated, Mayon Volcano, has dropped out of the top-77 sites. Mayon Volcano had been on 17th place two weeks ago.

Voting is done online through www.new7wonders.com.

At the start of the campaign for the 7 New Wonders of Nature, some 200 nominations were submitted to the organizers by some half a million people.

Nominations and voting will continue until December 31, 2008. The top 77 sites, based on the number of global votes gathered, will become the Official Nominees and will be eligible for consideration by a Panel of Experts who will shortlist 21 finalists.

The Panel of Experts will be chosen by New7Wonders Foundations whose names will be withheld until the winners are announced.

The top ten sites for the New 7 Wonders of Nature as of latest poll are Ha Long Bay of Vietnam, Ganges River of Bangladesh and India, the Amazon River of South America, Mount Everest of Nepal, Cocos Island in Costa Rica, Mount Fuji of Japan, Angel Falls of Venezuela, Lake Atitlan of Guatemala and the Niagara Falls in Canada and the United States.

Meanwhile, Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim is flying to the United States today to officially launch an international campaign in support of Chocolate Hills. The mayor is tasked by Gov. Erico Aumentado together with Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Norris Oculam to spearhead the campaign for Chocolate Hills.

Lim said that the panel of experts that will eventually choose the 7 Wonders of Nature will evaluate the extent of support a particular site gets worldwide.
