CEBU.
Super flyweight contender AJ "Bazooka" Banal has
showed his fighting form as he decked his bantamweight sparring
partner during their final session at the famed ALA Gym in
Cebu.
A
report posted on www.philboxing.com on Sunday said Banal knocked
down Jojo "Flash Mongo" Intor, who is bigger than
him.
At
his fight weigh-in, Intor was supposed to be three to five
pounds heavier than Banal, who is set to face Caril Herrera
of Uruguay at the undercard of "Invasion: Philippines
vs the World." The fight date will be on April 6 at the
Araneta Coliseum.
Cebu
boxing patron Tony Aldeguer said Banal will sail on "rough
waters" against Herrera, who is unbeaten just like the
Filipino.
The
match-up between Banal and Herrera is an IBF eliminator for
the No. 1 spot.
Also
prepping for the fight date is bantamweight Rey "Boom
Boom" Bautista, who will be pitted against Mexican Genaro
Camago. The Mexican coming off a third round knockout win
over Jose Espinoza.
Bautista
will put his WBO super bantamweight Intercontinental title
on the line against Camargo.
The
Invasion's main event will be WBO bantamweight king Gerry
Peñalosa against ex-champ Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of
Thailand.
Since
losing to Peñalosa, Vorapin won a string of fights
on nearly a dozen Filipino fighters he faced in that almost
eight-year span. Five of the Thai's last six foes were Filipino
journeymen. He beat them all by KO.
The
Thai's impressive KO record has prompted Peñalosa to
train extra hard in order to avenge his countrymen's defeats.
"Invasion:
Philippines vs World" will be aired by ABS-CBN in cooperation
with Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.
