Bohol celebrates
Earth Day on Tues

The province will join the worldwide Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2008. This annual event is an opportunity for Earth's denizens to rekindle their commitment to care for the planet and make it a safer, healthier and cleaner world to live in.

The observance of Earth Day every April 22 of the year marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970 which the late U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson spearheaded. Earth Day is touted as the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities.

Since the celebration of Earth Day is geared towards the promotion of environmental awareness and activism worldwide, it is at this time when environmental issues are put forth to world stage. This year's celebration calls to attention the worsening climatic crisis, hence, "A Call for Climate" becomes this year's international global warming action theme.

In Bohol, the Bohol Initiators for Sustainable Agriculture and Development (BISAD) organizes activities on April 22, 2008 that include a Walk-and-Bike-for-Mother Earth event from Plaza Rizal to the Provincial Agriculture Office from 7 to 8 a.m., a kite-flying ceremony at the Provincial Agriculture Office grounds from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and a forum on agrofuels and the current rice crisis at the Provincial Agriculture Office Conference Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The local Earth Day celebration takes on the theme "Ang Kamatuoran sa Nagkainit nga Kalibutan" to highlight the impacts of global warming to human condition, particularly in the sector of agriculture which sustains the food needs of the entire population.

Issues that will be tackled during the forum on Earth Day prove not only timely but also highly relevant to all Boholano constituents from all walks of life.

Everyone is enjoined to take part in all the activities.
