Another bad year
for Bohol's boxing

After the failed attempt of ex-lightweight prospect Czar Amonsot last year, two other Boholano prospects of the famed ALA Gym suffered setbacks this year.

The once promising AJ "Bazooka" Banal and Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista followed suit against Latin-American beakbusters. Both fighters are still young and very eager to redeem themselves if given another chance.

The Corella-native who turns 20 today absorved his first defeat in 19 fights with 14 KOs, from the hands of Panamian champ Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion in the 10th round in Cebu City last July. He was leading in all scorecards of the judges after the bout was stopped by the referee. Banal was later diagnosed with low potassium level as the fight progressed. He has been unheard of since the debacle.

Bautista, on the other hand, dropped a shameful 8-round unanimous decision to Eriberto Ruiz of Mexico in his recent comeback in the US. The sorry loss derailed the 23-years-old Candijay, Bohol native's another bid for a world title since losing the first against ex-champion Daniel Ponce de Leon via a first round knockout.

Despite the setbacks, we extend our boxers a Merry Christmas and a successful New Year!
