Denoy in 1st title
Defense

After his successful tune-up fight for the first defense of his WBO Asia Pacific light flyweight crown, ALA boy Along Denoy was declared winner by technical decision over General Santos City's Michael Rodriguez in their bloody non-title bout Monday night at the Island City Mall carpark, this city.

Two cuts caused by accidental head clashes prompted the referee to stop the fight upon the doctor's recommendation in the sixth round of their scheduled fight.

CDN correspondent and ring judge Salven Lagumbay filed this report: The event was held as part of the birthday celebration for Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, who is hugely credited for boxing resurgence in Bohol.

Sportsman Antonio Lopez Aldeguer, Tagbilaran City Deputy Mayor Mario Uy, First Lady Dr. Charmaine Lim, wife of the celebrant and ABAP-7 prexy Nemesio Monton also graced the successful boxfest billed "Best of Boxing."

Aldeguer took time to present his two top guns - Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ "Bazooka" Banal who are seeing action against Mexican and Uruguay foes at the Araneta Coliseum this coming April.

A bloodied Denoy, way ahead on the scorecards, was declared the winner by technical decision after the stoppage.

WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo sad Denoy was allowed to take a non-title bout, and should defend his title in his next fight.

In the chief support, war ensued between Ricky Sismundo and Reman Salim when they engaged in a torrid exchange of leathers over ten rounds.

Sismundo, however, proved busier and pressed the action more en route to a 96-94, 96-94 and 99-91 win. The bout was a rematch of their earlier clash won by Sismundo by majority decision.

Glenn Masicampo upset ex-RP lightweight king Arnel Porras with a close eighth-round technical decision win. Porras was badly cut over his left eyebrow, prompting the ringside physician to stop the fight.

Fighting doctor JV Tuazon stopped Powell Balaba in the second round of their scheduled four-rounder. Balaba, who went down following a barrage of body shots in the second round, also went down in the opening round.

Edcel Tunacao eked out a unanimous decision verdict over Saddam Barambangan while Joseph Von Minoza stopped Albert Villacampa at 2:34 of the opening round. (With reports from Manny B, CDN)
