1st Boholana to top
medics board exam

UY

Bohol hits the limelight anew when a 26-year old Tagbilaran born consistent scholar emerged to top the medical board exams.

Edilfavia Mae Suaybaguio Uy is the first Boholana to top the doctors licensure examination. She is the eldest daughter of businessman Edilfonso Uy and the former Favia Suaybaguio, who was one of the board topnotchers for Pharmacy during her schooldays. She is the grand daughter of the late Boholano banker Alfonso and Paz Uy. Alfonso was the founder of First Consolidated Bank (FCB).

Her topping the board became a "hot news item" not only in the province but in Cebu as well as it was the first for a Cebu medical school to top the medical board exam. Uy who is a graduate of Cebu Doctor's University College of Medicine garnered a rating of 86.33% to top the physicians' licensure test given by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).

Uy was a consistent honor student. She graduated valedictorian from both elementary and high school at the Bohol Wisdom School. She took up Psychology at Cebu Doctor's University where she graduated magna cum laude. She was a scholar in said school where she studied medicine. She graduated cum laude with 18 medals.

During a radio interview, Uy said she thought of becoming a doctor because she was sickly as a child and she liked the doctors' white uniforms.

"I like to serve people when I get older," Uy recalled while admitting that she wanted to become a doctor since she was in kindergarten. However, not in her wildest dream to top a medical board exam.

She vowed to serve the country as a physician after she will pursue to specialize in internal medicine and plans to avail of training in the United States.

The parents of "Mayique" as she is fondly called said they attribute their daughter's success to hard work and her faith in God.

"We're very much happy of her being prayerful," the parents confided saying that their daughter maintains the devotion to St. Jude and St. Joseph of Cupertino. In fact, by special request, she requested that her thanksgiving prayer to these two saints be printed elsewhere in this issue.

Uy, along with other board passers that include her boyfriend Noel Icamuna, started attending thanksgiving masses since last Friday at various churches in Cebu City. She plans to go to nine churches "to thank the Lord for this blessing."

Her brother, Ian, 24, graduated valedictorian from both elementary and high school and passed the board examination for electronics and communications engineer. Her sister, Maia, 20, who is taking up respiratory therapy at the Cebu Doctor's University, is on the Dean's List.

The first Boholana medic board topnotcher is expected to get a rousing welcome when she comes home this week from Cebu City.
