Chinese New Year at ICM
By ARIEL E. FULLIDO

As the first day of the new lunar year falls this Thursday, February 7, in the Western calendar, Island City Mall joins the Chinese around the globe on this special day to celebrate the Year of the Rat, a time symbolic of wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture.

At the mall, one can enjoy watching or joining the Dragon Parade on Thursday starting at 4:00 o' clock in the afternoon, and followed by a Dragon Dance with a Martial Arts Exhibition at the Activity Center.

The favorite Chinese New Year pudding, tikoy, is also available at the Supermarket, near the Home & Meals area, while Chinese lanterns in different colorful designs are also available at the Home & Fashion Department. One can get a tikoy free for every minimum cash purchase worth P500 at the Home & Fashion Department.

In the Chinese New year celebration, many Chinese people will be going to bed with visions of white mice and big fortunes running through their heads.Chinese people believe that each of the twelve animals in the calendar infuses its characteristics into the year that bears its name. Based on this, the Year of the Rat will be a year of happiness, hope and good fortune, three traits Rat is symbolic of in Chinese culture. As the Rat is positioned first on the list of the twelve animals, people will get things done expediently and achieve personal goals.

Moreover, an ancient Chinese belief has it that wealth comes to a family when a species of rodent appears in a family's house. According to Chinese folklore, people born in the year of a certain animal are thought to possess the special traits of that animal. For this reason, people born during the Year of the Rat are seen as clever, lively and optimistic. They are said to have a strong ability to adapt to new surroundings and to find happiness in any situation.
