Lim: "crime city" tag a challenge

The label that this city is a "crime city" following recent shooting incidents was taken as a challenge by City Mayor Dan Lim.

Although he found no basis on such |"tagline," the mayor said in his weekly Mayor's Report over dyRD yesterday that he takes it as a challenge because it gives him the opportunity to exert more effort in the fight against criminalities.

The apprehension that Tagbilaran has turned into a "crime city" surfaced after residents were alarmed on at least six shooting incidents and several burglaries which started the New Year. All cases remain unsolved, including the 7th shooting incident last Monday. (See separate story)

But the mayor asked listeners: Why is it that a lot of tourists keep coming in the city if indeed the tag is true? Just because the shooting incidents are happening in his area of responsibility it does not make sense to consider as such.

He said that most of the suspects of the incidents are not residents of Tagbilaran based on the police initial findings.

To show that he is not sitting on his job as chief executive, the mayor said that crime prevention efforts are being intensified with the setting up check points at strategic points almost nightly the past weeks.

One of these drives in the prevention of crimes is the demolition of illegal shanties at the central market and causeway fish terminal.

He said one of the shanties demolished showed a lair of illegal elements based on police report.

In an earlier interview, the mayor stressed "The vendors were given permits to build stalls to shelter them from the sun and rain. They abused this by constructing permanent structures that are not related to the original intention."

The mayor noted that drinking pubs, videoke bars mushroomed without permits at the fish terminal turning the place into an entertainment hub including fish pen under a permanent structure. (RVO)
