Woods defend
IBF crown

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.- Clinton Woods will defend his IBF lightheavyweight title against Antonio Tarver in April and then try and set up a fight with Joe Calzaghe.

Woods will make the fifth defense of his belt against the 39-year-old Tarver, a former undisputed champion, at Tampa, Florida, on April 12.

Tarver won the title by knocking out Roy Jones Jr. in 2004 before losing it to Bernard Hopkins two years later.

"He lost to old man Bernard Hopkins on points, but I am going to knock him out and then my status as the best light-heavyweight in the world will be confirmed," Woods said.

"It is a fight I have been longing for," Woods said Tuesday. "He told me he would beat me years ago - well, now he has got the chance.

"He can't run any longer because the deal has been made. It is smell-the-coffee time and he is going to find out the hard way what a through beating is all about."

Calzaghe fights Hopkins in a non-title, light-heavyweight bout in Las Vegas on April 19.

"If Joe Calzaghe gets past granddad Hopkins the week after I make mincemeat of Tarver, he can come looking for me," Woods said. "I'm ready for Calzaghe any time and any place, and he knows it."
