Reverend
Monsignor John R. Pernia will mark his 50th anniversary
of priesthood on Friday, Jan. 25.
The
74-year old clergy will be the main celebrant during
the Thanksgiving Mass at the Lourdes Parish Church,
this city at 10 o'clock in the morning, The celebrant's
younger brother, Very Rev. Fr. Antonio Pernia who is
presently the first Asian superior-general of the Society
of Divine Word (SVD) will be one of those who will concelebrate
the mass. Other priests who will concelebrate are Msgr.
Arcamo, Msgr. Cirilo Darunday, Jr. and Rev. Fr. Jimboy
Saco, Lourdes parish priest.

He
was ordained priest on March 22, 1958 after completing his
studies at the San Carlos Major Seminary in Cebu City.
His
first assignment was secretary to the late Bishop Manuel Mascarinas,
DD, the first Boholano bishop while serving also as parochial
vicar of the St. Joseph Cathedral. He likewise served as procurator
and professor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary.

Twenty
years of his life as a priest was devoted as a military
chaplain starting from the rank of first lieutenant
until he ended his service with a rank of full colonel.
While
in the military service, he served as chaplain of the
Radar Station at the Philippine Air Force, Camp Crame,
Camp Aguinaldo and Recom 8 Regional Command in Samar.
He likewise served as chancellor to His Eminence Rufino
Cardinal Santos and Archbishop Mariano Gaviola, both
AFP military vicars
While
serving as military chaplain, he studied Air Force basic
course, Constabulary advance course, Master in Community
Development and AFP general staff course.

Msgr.
Pernia served since 1986n in various parishes in the United
States: St. Brendan Church, All Souls Church, and St. Paul
Church, Star of the Sea Church all in San Francisco, California.
He likewise served as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Church in Daly City, California and with the church administrative
retirement in February 2004.
The
celebrant who hails from this city is the son of the late
Dr Juan and Petra del Mar Pernia.
Joining
him in this Friday's celebration are family members: Corazon
Pernia Rodis (master in music and California broker-realtor),
Socorro Pernia Veloso (chemist and Phd in communication),
Rosario Pernia Velasquez (home economics and interior designer),
Dr. Ernesto Pernia (Phd Economics), Joseph Pernia (masters
in business administration), Very Rev Fr. Antonio Pernia,
(SVD superior general of Society of Divine Word), Mercedes
Pernia Hugo (medical technologist). The eldest in the family
was the late Milagros Pernia Ordonez (pharmacist and medical
technologist).
