MENDEZ

Lawyer
Virgilio Mendez was appointed recently as Deputy Director
of the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI).
A
native of Ubay town, the 54-year old Mendez served as
NBI regional director for Region 10 before his new assignment.
Born
to a farmer and a public school teacher, Mendez finished
high school at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary,
this city.

Instead
of pursuing a priestly vocation, Mendez later took up law
at the Divine Word College, graduating in 1976.
He
took and passed the bar exam on the same year. After the bar,
Mendez joined a law firm in Pasay City and became assistant
manager of a security agency owned by an uncle.

In
1978, Mendez joined the NBI as Agent-1. After training
at the NBI Academy, he was assigned to Region 9 in Zamboanga
City.
Through
sheer dedication and hardwork, he became assistant regional
director in 2002 until his appointment as regional director
two years later, in 2004.
Mendez
completed the NBI Command and Staff Course at the NBI
Academy in Manila; Financial Complex Investigation at
the International Law Enforcement Academy in Bangkok,
Thailand and a study on criminal justice education at
the University of Virginia, USA.

His
accomplishments include the filing of charges against the
suspects of the Rizal Day bombing, resolving the gory killing
of Elsa Castillo (the chop-chop lady), arrested the provincial
fiscal of Bukidnon for extortion in 2002, solved the Marlboro
gang rape involving suspects belonging to prominent families
of Cagayan de Oro City, solved the double homicide case involving
nephews of Gov. Oscar Moreno and several other high profile
cases.
Mendez's
appointment was signed by Pres. Gloria Arroyo. He took oath
as new NBI deputy director in front of Justice Sec. Raul Gonzales.
