Businessman
Mariano Uy has filed yesterday at the City Prosecutor's Office
two complaints for libel and grave slander against City Councilor
Edgar Kapirig.
Uy
is asking P10-million in damages against Kapirig for allegedly
maligning his name and the Botika sa Katawhan, which he established.
In
his complaint, Uy stated that last November 16, 2007, the
respondent Kapirig uttered defamatory words against him.
Kapirig
allegedly questioned the finances and proceeds of donations
from the United States intended for the Botika sa Katawhan.

The
Botika sa Katawhan is a project of Uy, providing free
medicines to poor city residents. Uy claims the Botika
has currently given free medicines to about 8,000 beneficiaries.
According
to Uy, the city councilor uttered the defamatory statements
in the presence of a doctor assigned at the Botika sa
Katawhan and three others who have executed their sworn
statements in support to Uy's allegations.
The
complaint cited that "the words uttered by the
respondent (Kapirig) has cast doubt on the integrity
of [Uy] as the founder and administrator of the Botika
sa Katawhan.

Uy
also stated in his complaint that during the barangay confrontation
between him and Kapirig which was aired over radio stations,
the latter allegedly insinuated that "[Uy] bribed witnesses
in the past; that he has a relationship with another woman
and paid supporters who were carrying placards outside the
barangay hall at that time."
The
complainant added that the P10-million in damages, will be
donated to the Botika sa
Katawhan.
Both
close allies of City Mayor Dan Lim, several attempts to amicably
settle Uy and Kapirig failed.
