First Karatedo open
championship in Cortes

In line with the promotion of karatedo as martial arts and sports, the 1st Karatedo Open Invitational Championship was held recently in the town of Cortes.

The event was participated in by seven karate clubs of the province, namely: JKA San Miguel under Shihan Frank Dajunan, BSKA Tubigon of Sensei Boy Baguio, Loon Karatedo Club of Nestor Pergis, Panglao Karate Club of Sensei Rene Cubar, Black Scorpion Karate Club of Sensei Jingjing Dosdos, Booy Martial Arts of Sensei Elmer Baquero, and the Promotion for Integrated Martial Arts of Cortes under Sensei Eldred Cua.

The tournament started with the recognition of participants and a welcome message from Cortes Vice Mayor Rodrigo Uy. A certification was awarded to Shihan Frank Dajunan of JKA and Sensei Erussel Concon Cua as PKF DECS and DepEd representative respectively.

The JKA San Miguel emerged as the tournament's overall champion. The Black Scorpion Karate Club placed second and the host club of Cortes got the third place. The karatedo tournament was divided into two: the kata or non-combat competition and the kumite or sparring. There were about fifty karate practitioners and more than ten club instructors who participated in the event.

The tournament was officiated by Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) Regional Director Manuel Aloba Sr. and national judge Noeme Suarez.

The organizers extended their heartfelt gratitude to Cong. Edgar Chatto, Board Member Ae Damalerio and Jojo Veloso, the Municipality of Cortes with Mayor Jasmin Balistoy and Vice Mayor Rodrigo Uy, the barangay council headed by Punong Barangay Romeo Labor, and AUSIE Water of Bingag, Dauis, for the success of the activity.

Another tournament is scheduled on Feb. 24 at the BIT International College Quadrangle. The BIT IC will host the said event in line with its mission to encourage students to excel not only in academics but also in the field of sports. It is noted that the BIT IC Karatedo Team will represent Bohol in the Regional PRISAA. Last year, the school fielded three karatedo players to the National PRISAA. The BIT Karatedo team is trained under the Japan Karate Association (JKA).

On a final note, karatedo instructors are encouraged to join the Regional Referee/Judge Training this coming February. Interested karate instructors may contact or see BIT IC Karatedo team coach Sensei Erussel Concon Cua or text or call Cell No. 0928-750-1638 for more information.
