Torre banners RP
to ASEAN Masters

Asia's first chess Grandmaster Eugene Torre will banner the country's campaign in the inaugural ASEAN Masters Circuit Chess Individual Championships which gets underway on Jan. 8 to 20 in Tarakan, Indonesia.

Tarakan is an island off the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is a marshy island situated in the eastern Celebes Sea, off the northeastern coast of Borneo and was the site of battles between Allied and Japanese forces in 1942 and 1945.

Supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), other Filipino chessers in the meet were 14-year-old and currently the world's youngest GM Wesley So, GM Mark Paragua, IMs Jayson Gonzales, Barlo Nadera, Fernie Donguines, Oliver Barbosa and NM Rolando Nolte for the men's side and WIM Beverly Mendoza and WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales for the women's side.

"Hope makapag perform taoy ng maganda ditto sa Asean Masters Circuit sa Tarakan, Indonesia," said Torre, the longtime vanguard of Philippine Chess.

"Magandang training ko na din ito sa rematch namn ni Joey (Antonio)," Torre said referring to his rematch with Antonio in March where the Quezon City government led by majority floor leader Ariel Inton, New San Jose Builders Inc. and Eurotel are the major backers.

The Asean Masters Circuit is divided into three brackets: GM section, IM section and Women's section.

After Indonesia, the Asean Masters Circuit will be held in Vietnam, Singapore and Philippines.
