A new project aimed to encourage livelihood enterprise in this town - island province
of Bohol, central Philippines - featuring floating cottages, adventure activities,
and arts and crafts marketing, is scheduled to open this week.
The
Maribojoc Information Office disclosed Friday that the project envisions to provide
a mechanism to encourage entrepreneurs and craft persons to develop and market
their products and services for specific demands. |
The
project intends to help propel Maribojoc's development to a faster pace, but in
a sustainable manner, the same source said. It aims to showcase Maribojoc's products,
crafts, services and adventure sites and activities through periodic exhibits,
mini-fairs, livelihood demonstrations, home stays, floating markets, display and
other appropriate marketing media.
Spearheaded
by the Maribojocanon Enterprise Team (MET), a newly organized partnership of entrepreneurs
here, the project's initial activity will be a riverside floating studio café
and traditional massage near the Abatan River Bridge, said Lourdes Tan Endo, MET
coordinator. The floating nipa huts are made of natural bamboo materials and their
design is inspired by floating villages in Mindanao and other Southeast Asian
countries, she added.

There will be free
traditional massage and reflexology services offered on June 24, from 2 p.m. to
4:30 p.m. at the Riverside Café and Floating Massage site near the Abatan
Bridge in Abatan, Lingkod, said James Mabilin, placement officer of the Manpower
Development and Placement Services, one of the project's coordinating offices.
The
office of Mayor Leoncio Evasco Jr. has endorsed the MET's use of the Livelihood
Center in Abatan in connection with the project entitled, "Developing, Showcasing
and Marketing Maribojoc Crafts, Traditional Services and Adventure Activities,"
subject to certain conditions, Endo said. | In
a letter datd June 10, 2008, Mayor Evasco said that the use is "temporary,"
adding that "the original purpose of the center should be upheld at all times,"
that it is to be used as a "display and demonstration area for products and
processes of the handicrafts industry of Maribojoc," and that cleanliness
and sanitation be maintained.
In
a talk with MET's coordinators, Vice Mayor Gabino Redulla also favored the project,
noting that the center's original suppliers should still be tapped.
The
project will facilitate periodic training-workshops that encourage product development,
packaging and marketing, as well as increase the capacity of the youth and entrepreneurs
to engage in enterprise development and management through mentoring and direct
involvement, said Cooper Resabal, MET coordinator.
"There
is a vast potential to develop products, introduce new designs, transform traditional
practices into viable enterprises, or to showcase adventure activities and natural
tour destinations in the municipality," Resabal added.
Project
implementation will be coordinated with the Municipal Planning and Development
Council (MPDC), the Manpower Development and Placement Office, the Sangguniang
Kabataan, craft enterprises and NGOs and Pos in specific Maribojoc communities.
Maribojoc,
found some 20 kilometers northeast of provincial capital Tagbilaran, is a fifth
class municipality whose population of some 18,000 depend mainly on fishing and
farming.
