Ruby Genre scholarships to 67 studes
By ADAM L. SALIGUMBA

When it comes to blessings in the form of scholarships, Loon's students get them pouring in bucketfuls.

A total of 67 high school freshmen students, who had just graduated from different elementary schools in the previous school year, are the lucky recipients of scholarship grants from the Ruby Genre '63 Foundation, Inc. beginning this SY 2008-2009.

These are not ordinary students, however, but are the current top graduates to come out of the public elementary schools of Loon's two DepEd districts.

The Ruby Genre '63 Foundation is an organization composed of the alumni of Class 1963 of the Loon Central Elementary School (now Loon South Central Elementary School). The foundation's current president is DBM Undersecretary Mario L. Relampagos, who hails from barangay Moto Sur, Loon.

While most scholarship programs stipulate that scholarship-grantees come only from indigent families, that of Ruby Genre '63 is unique in the sense that it does not discriminate on a student's parents' financial status, but picks out instead the best and the brightest, in this case, the top five of the current school year's batch of elementary school graduates.

A young Ruby Genre Foundation scholar enjoys a whole year free tuition, school supplies, P300.00 monthly allowance, and freedom of choice to study in any of the three private schools in Loon.

The scholar's only restriction is that in order to continue to enjoy the scholarship he must not fail in any subject and maintain a general average grade of 85%.

Basac Elementary School head, Mrs. Stella C. Orcullo, who serves as Ruby Genre '63 secretary, said that the association started offering the scholarship program only last school year to fresh elementary school graduates.

That year the foundation accommodated only ten scholars who passed through a rigid screening and examination.

This school year, owing to fund availability, 67 of the top graduates of public elementary schools belonging to the Loon South and Loon North Districts who were able to apply on time, especially the valedictorians and salutatorians, are included in the program without having to undergo the screening and examination.

Thanks to the efforts of USec. Relampagos a foundation based in Manila, the SABER Foundation, has been instrumental in the granting of the scholarship to the 67 high school freshmen scholars.

In early part of May last month a SABER Foundation board director, Atty. Cris Dionido, arrived in Loon to hand over an initial check of P225,000.00. More scholarship funds from the said foundation will be made available in the future.

The granting of scholarships is just one of the many programs of the Ruby Genre '63 Foundation. Aside from the many development projects it has accomplished for its alma mater, the Loon South Central Elementary School, the foundation has established a computer learning center in the LSCES that gives out regular TESDA-accredited computer literacy trainings to students and professionals.

Recently, on June 7, 2008, the foundation conducted the second closing exercises of its Computer Literacy Program at the Paseo de Loon.

Certificates of Completion were distributed to 70 computer graduates composed of high school and college students, retired professionals, government workers and private company employees.

TESDA Center Chief, Dr. Floro T. Ringca gave the confirmation of the graduates which was witnessed by Vice Mayor Edwin R. Ladeza, Ruby Genre officers and members led by their vice-president Godofredo Orcullo, LSCES principal Alberto Mangaron and computer literacy trainer Jerome C. Orcullo.

With its thrusts into educational aid and development, the Ruby Genre '63 Foundation has joined the local government unit headed by Mayor Lloyd Peter M. Lopez, M.D. and Vice Mayor Edwin R. Ladeza in giving appropriate attention to Loon's top and highly intelligent students in both the secondary and tertiary levels.

This school year, the municipal government is financing the education of eight pioneering municipal college scholars who are currently enrolled taking up the courses of their choice in different CVSCAFT campuses.

Along with the free tuition fee, each scholar receives a monthly allowance of P1,000.00.
