Gas hits
P60.50/ltr

Unleaded and premium gasoline has hit an all-time high at P60.50 per liter which took effect yesterday.

Gas stations here have been increasing pump prices of premium, diesel and regular gasoline over P1 per liter for several weeks now.

The new round of increase has met sharp reactions from public utility passengers and vehicle operators.

A local organization of jeepney and bus operators are demanding the removal of the 12% expanded value added tax (EVAT) on petroleum and electricity to mitigate the effects of weekly price hikes.

The Nagkahiusang Drayber sa Bohol (NADBO-Piston) and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) separately issued press statements vehemently urging the national government to cancel the imposition of 12% EVAT.

The groups cited figures that based on May 7 oil price levels, the E-VAT scrapping would mean a roll back of PhP5.83/liter of unleaded gasoline; gas, PhP5.29/liter; diesel, PhP4.98/liter; and liquefied petroleum gas, PhP68.83 per 11-kilogram cylinder tank.

The statement of Bayan-Bohol signed John Ruiz III said canceling the E-VAT on oil products would also mean saving PhP150 per day for jeepney drivers; PhP23/day for tricycle dirvers; PhP55/day for the fishermen; and PhP68/day for LPG users.

Ruiz said scrapping the E-VAT is better than the government's effort to subsidize the poor.
