The majority block
of the 10th Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tagbilaran has prepared a resolution granting
provisional authority to tricycle operators and drivers to collect an additional
P1 for the minimum fare in the wake of the unstoppable weekly hike of gasoline
price.
This
is good news to tricycle operators and drivers but may not be to commuters. But
with the current oil crisis, it would not be hard for tricycle commuters to understand
the rationale behind the increase in tricycle fares.
The
resolution would be presented for approval during the session of the city council
on Tuesday. Once approved, the tricycle drivers can immediately start collecting
the one-peso increase pending the passage of an ordinance amending the provision
on tricycle fares of the city's transportation code.

Aside
from the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, Sen.
Barak Obama's nomination as the presidential candidate of the US Democratic Party
is another hot topic in local coffee shops by people who pretend to be in the
know.
For
the Celtics-Lakers rivalry revival, most of the local basketball fans root for
the Bryant-led Lakers. This is understandable considering that most Tagbilaranons
in the US are in Los Angeles. The Lakers is also a prominent team during NBA Finals
while the Celtics was in hibernation for 21 years after the Larry Bird-Robert
Parish-Danny Ainge era. Anyway, the Celtics took Game One last Friday, 98-88.
With
the 2-3-2 format in the NBA Finals, the Celtics take advantage of clinching the
championship in Game 7 for having four home court games. They are unbeatable in
their home court, including against the Lakers during the elimination. We agree
to the forecast that it would be Lakers by Game Six.

Considering
that there is still a luxury of time to discuss full-length in our future columns
about the impending Obama-Mcaine US presidential battle in November, we will just
tackle briefly on Obama's clinching of the Democrats' presidential nomination
last Tuesday.
Obama,
first-term senator from Illinois, would be the first black presidential candidate
of the Democratic Party and possibly, the first black US president. His closest
rival, Hillary Clinton, is set to officially end her campaign after losing in
the state primaries and to the so-called Democrat superdelegates.
But
as correctly observed by Fox News, Obama is a non-electable candidate of a winning
party while McCain is an electable candidate of a losing party. We shall elucidate
more on this in our future columns. Just stay stuck.

With
the deafening silence from other local leaders and the power consumers here, we
feel that City Mayor Dan Lim could be waging a lonely crusade against the application
of the Bohol Light Co. with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to pass on
to its consumers the P148 million it has paid for franchise tax from the year
2002 to 2005.
To
be spread in three years, this could be easily translated into an average of P300
addition to the monthly electric bills of every consumer. The city mayor has registered
his vehement opposition to the application which will be heard on June 12 at the
Governor's Mansion by ERC.
If
the P300-addition to our electric bills would be just nothing to the city power
consumers, then the city mayor could indeed be waging a lonely crusade although
he rationalized that as a leader, it is his moral duty to do so.
