Ready to rumble

BANAL, BAUTISTA

Two of Bohol's most promising fighters are doing fine in their respective training at the world-class ALA Gym, Cebu.

Both WBO Intercontinental superbantam champ Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and WBO Asia Pacific Youth superfly ruler AJ "Bazooka" Banal has been looking sharp and primed for their upcoming 12-round fights on April 6 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Bautista defends his title against Mexican Genaro Camargo, while Banal takes on fellow unbeaten warrior Caril Herrera in an IBF superfly eliminator underneath the huge "Invasion" card put up by ABS-CBN, Golden Boy Promotions and ALA Promotions.

The main event pits WBO bantam king Gerry Penalosa defending for the first time against Thailand's Ratanachai Sor Vorapin over twelve.

Bautista looked good in a four-round sparring session Thursday against fellow ALA fighter Joseph Omanz, while Banal toyed with the shorter Federico Catubay in their four-round session.

ALA chief trainer Edito Villamor said that final sparring for both fighters was set on yesterday.

The duo, along with Villamor and RP bantam champ Michael Domingo, departs for Manila on April 2 in time for the final press conference set the following day, and the weigh-in scheduled on Saturday, April 5.

"Boom Boom and Banal have done their assignments in the gym. It's time to do the real thing," said Villamor in an exclusive interview at the ALA Gym.

Domingo is also seeing action in a 10-round non-title bout against Thailand's Thepnimit Sor Chitpattana in the undercard.

Another Boholano hopeful will fight in the undercard. The undefeated and newly-crowned WBO Oriental superbantam king Ciso "Kid Terrible" Morales will defend for the first time his belt against Korean Yoo Shin Kim (6-1-0,4 KOs). He also holds the WBO Asia Pacific crown.

Morales, however, was not included in the list of awardees in the recent Elorde Awards Night. (see separate story). (with reports from Manny B/CDN)
