No-to-GMO mural
contest launched

A mural painting contest was launched on March 3, at the Bohol Cultural Center grounds. The said activity was attended by several students and advocates of sustainable agriculture and organic food systems. Engr. Vicente T. Loquellano, president of the Bohol Initiators for Sustainable Agriculture and Development which co-organizes the event, presented the purpose of the mural painting activity.

The concept of the mural contest revolves around the promotion of the people's right to safe and nutritious food, especially that which is produced through organic and sustainable means. It also aims to depict the Boholano public's rejection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and food products which pose grave threats to human health and the environment. GMOs are organisms whose genes have been modified through the insertion of additional genetic material taken from other species. Because of their altered genetic composition, GMOs produce substances that have various toxic effects.

The contest also showcases the artistic ingenuity of our young artists from the College of Architecture and Fine Arts of the University of Bohol. The murals are to be rendered on the concrete fence walls in front of the Bohol Cultural Center. The GMO-Free Ordinance of Bohol will also be mounted alongside the mural paintings of the participating student-artists.

This mural painting contest is organized by the BISAD, the Young People for Development (YPD) and the Philippines-Australia Community Assistance Program (PACAP-FOCAS3) and duly supported by the Provincial Government of Bohol, the Office of the Vice Governor, UB College of Architecture and Fine Arts (UB-CAFA), Bohol Center for Development Studies (BCDS) and Occidental Enterprises.
