Lower crime rate, but murder,
robbery double

By: KIT BAGAIPO

LIM

City Mayor Dan Lim yesterday said crime volume is lower this year compared to the last two years covering the months of January and February of each year.

However, the incidence of murder and robbery had doubled this year.

Since the start of 2008, three persons were murdered while 36 cases of robbery were recorded.

However, Mayor Lim said this could not be the reason why the city be called a "crime city" as perceived by some sectors.

Based on a report made by City Police Chief Insp. Jacinto Cesar during the City Peace and Order Council meeting last Thursday, a comparative crime statistics for the months of January and February in the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 shows a 35 percent decrease in crime incidents.

Speaking during his weekly "Mayor's Report" yesterday, Lim said that in the months of January and February 2006, crime volume was recorded at 129 incidents. In 2007, the City PNP tallied 164 incidents.

In 2008, city police data showed only 109 incidences of crime.

Index crimes are also down by 30.1 percent, the mayor said, with 79 incidents compared to 88 and 113 in 2006 and 2007.

Crimes which resulted in physical injuries went down by 11.1 percent. The police also reported one incident of rape for the period January-February 2008.

Theft has also decreased with 12 recorded since the start of this year compared to 41 and 46 in the year 2006 and 2007.

Non-index crimes have also declined with 30 incidents recorded from the 41 and 51 incidents in 2006 and 2007.

The mayor admitted that the City PNP needs to step up its capability to solve crimes.

The crime solution efficiency of the city police is down by about 20 percent.

Lim said he formed a city monitoring team to check on police characters. He said motorcycles will be color coded to be easily identified.
