Nationwide health coops confab here

The Medical Mission Group Hospitals and Health Services Cooperative Philippines Federation will be holding its 10th General Assembly at the Bohol Heritage Hotel tomorrow afternoon.

The MMGHHSCP Federation is made up of 23 Primary Health Cooperatives nationwide.

These health coops are in Aklan (Kalibo), Benguet (Baguio City), Bicol (Albay), Bicol (Camarines Sur - Iriga), Bicol (Sorsogon), Bohol (Tagbilaran), Bulacan (Bocaue), Cebu City, Davao City, Davao del Norte (Tagum), Masbate, MetroManila East (Pasig), Negros Oriental (Dumaguete);

Oriental Mindoro (Calapan), Palawan (Puerto Princesa), Quezon Province (Lucena, Lukban, Gumaka), South Cotabato (General Santos), Southern Leyte (Maasin), Surigao del Sur (Tandag), Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte (Dipolog), Zamboanga de Sur (Pagadian) and Zambales (Olongapo)

Member chapters of the MMGHHSCP Federation operate hospitals, diagnostic centers and drug distribution facilities nationwide. The MMGHHSCP, as the first health cooperative in the Philippines, envisions adequate, affordable, accessible and appropriate health care delivery to the community with a special bias for the marginalized.

This year's GA theme is "Health Through Community Effort and Individual Participation." The Federation affirms its belief that stand-alone hospitals or health institutions whose operations are not based on community organization, participation and patronage along the lines of need and not individual affordability, are things of the past.

The Federation's thrust this year is the nationwide establishment of Paluagan sa Kalusugan, a community based health financing scheme patterned after the age-old tradition of Dajong, a community mortuary fund so prevalent in the traditions of the province of Bohol.

A corollary project of PSK is the establishment of training centers in member chapters' hospitals for the out of school youth. The training curriculum centers on civil trades like hospital building maintenance and housekeeping and will eventually lead to civil trades and health care giving. This program is designed with the participation of Don Bosco Institutes and TESDA.

The Federation has a total membership of approximately 2000 medical doctors nationwide and employs 10,000 health and auxiliary workers in their hospitals and other health facilities nationwide. Its total consolidated assets add up to one billion pesos.
