fire hits Ubay port area An
early dawn fire on Good Friday razed some 22 establishments along the road leading
to the port in Ubay town.
No
casualty was reported but unconfirmed report reaching the Chronicle revealed that
a spice vendor was intensely apprehensive upon waking up at the height of the
blaze and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Don Emillio del Valle Hospital.
The
victim, identified as Yuyen Pardillo, more than 50 yrs old, married, was sleeping
inside her store at the public market, 100 meters away, more or less, from the
fire scene.
The
local fire station received the alarm at about 3:45 a.m. and quenched the fire
at about 5 a.m., said SFO1 Alexis Asas. Seven fire stations from the different
municipalities and a fire track from the Alturas Group of Companies responded.

fire allegedly started from a store selling fishing needs owned by Bryan Longos,
located just off the lighthouse and fronting PPA passenger terminal building.
One
Allan Avergonzado, 35, married and cousin of the store owner recounted that shortly
after 3 a.m. he noticed thick smoke emanating from a room where an electrical
outlet, accordingly, short circuited. That he was able to seek assistance after
breaking open the main door a few minutes later.

Owners
of the gutted establishments include Gerry Rabago, Bryan Lungos, Raul Ibañez,
Clara Dalquez, Jackielyn Dalquez, Juliet Perez, Estilita Ceniza, Jone Perez, Charlie
Balani, Marites Valleser, Rodora Uy, Nelson Boyles, Orbana Boyles, Agnes Abayabay,
Francisco Dupalco, Carmilina Mabalatan, Dolores Mugo, LoveliaH Beronilia, Wowie
Betonio, Nene Boyles, Arnel Longos, and Virginia Flores.
Mayor
Eutiquio Bernales said the LGU will extend financial assistance to the victims.
The responding fire stations came from Talibon, Tagilaran City, Valencia,
Jagna, Carmen, Tubigon, and Clarin.
Bernales
personally supervised the distribution of the LGU aid to the fire victims at the
RM gym. He was assisted by Poblacion Barangay chairman Rodulfo Mendez.
Assistance
includes P1,000 per store/household owner-victim, packs of rice, noodles and canned
goods.
Others
who pledged to extend help are the Ubay businessmen's group, Fish Vendors Association,
Barangay Poblacion and the Ubay Parish Pastoral Council through moderator kagawad
Costan Atuel.
Earlier,
the provincial assistance of similar foodstuffs minus the money were delivered
by Col. Raul Mendez of the PDCC with DSWD provincial director Constancia Tunacao,
GSO engineer Rosalinda Yu, among others. However, distribution of the same will
be on Tuesday, said an employee of the MSWO. (Wenny Reyes)
