The battle for the Third District congressional seat will be a virtual clash of the titans - between two administration figures holding national posts in the Arroyo government.

As reports arise that Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Arthur Yap is maneuvering to cut a compromise deal for a single term in Congress, former congressman and now Transportation and Communication Assistant Secretary Eladio Jala, who has bared his plans of staging a comeback in the 3rd district, says no such agreement was reached between him and the agriculture boss.

Lawmakers keep watch on budget

City lawmakers belonging to the minority bloc continue to keep a close watch on all budgetary requests at the Sangguniang Panlungsod following the pending issue of the P6.2 million unliquidated cash advances of ranking city hall officials including the city mayor, and several other queries on huge increase in this year's budget as compared to last year.

The budget for last year was P258,238,389 as compared to this year's budget of P337,052,121.

Thailand aborted


PATTAYA, THAILAND. Helicopters evacuated foreign leaders out of this beach resort city after anti-government protests forced the Thai government to postpone the 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders Summit.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo boarded a civilian helicopter which landed on the roof of the luxury Royal Cliff Grand Hotel, where the meeting was being held, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said by telephone from Pattaya.

Two speedboats are now based somewhere in Panglao after the training , which was also attended by Gano, head of the tourist police and concurrent Panglao police chief.
