City budget 'railroaded'

Rama sees fund for 2010 polls


There's no stopping the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) majority bloc who practically rammed the approval of the P337,052,121 city budget for 2009 despite vehement protests by opposition lawmakers.

City Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso and minority councilors Zenaido Rama, Anne Mariquit Oppus and Bebiano Inting cast doubts on the "unjustified increase" of this year's fund appropriation by P78,813,732 or 31% higher than last year's.

3 Red Cross kidnap
victims alive, safe

ZAMBOANGA CITY. The three abducted members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who were abducted Thursday were able to call and spoke with their superiors in Manila, an ICRC official said Saturday.

Roland Bigler, ICRC communication cooperation delegate based in Manila, said Andreas Notter 38, head officer of ICRC Western Mindanao, and Engineers Eugenio Vagni and Marie Jean Lacaba had assured them that they were safe.

Rice prices increase even
bumper harvest

A spike in prices of rice hit local markets the past weeks even as officials assure of an abundant supply for the entire province.

Monitoring done by Station dyRD showed an increase of P2 per kilo to as high as P6 per kilo in all rice varieties sold in public markets.

Commercial rice such as those sold at P26 and P28 per kilo are now priced at P29 and P34, respectively. The premium variety is sold at P37 to P40 in the market from a per kilo price of P34 a few weeks ago. Fancy rice are sold at P42 to P46 per kilo.
