prof: best finance educator An
unassuming but sharp mentor of Holy Name University has recently etched an indelible
mark in the annals of education after having been adjudged as the Rafael Buenaventura
Most Outstanding Finance Educator in the Philippines for SY 2009-2010.
Michael
Parmisano Cañares, a professor of finance and accounting, bested other
finalists all across the archipelago and brought home the prestigious award given
by no less than the Finance Executives of the Philippines (FINEX) and the Citi
Foundation.
Top
honchos in the financial community, together with topnotch finance educators,
gathered at the Peninsula Hotel in Manila to select the best in the competitive
pool of national finalists. The
finalists were evaluated based on their personal qualities and character, knowledge
of finance, teaching effectiveness and professional and community involvement.
The
awarding rites were held in a posh reception at the Executive Business Center
of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The
FINEX-CITI award aimed primarily to honor the finance education profession and
to recognize the outstanding qualities and contributions of finance and business
teachers. |

it is also an avenue of inspiring teachers to achieve excellence in finance and
business education in line with global best practices, and of actively promoting
business education as an important component of tertiary level education that
will make graduates more competitive in the global workforce.
The
award further cemented HNU's status as one of the best institutions of higher
learning nationwide. Furthermore, the university's accountancy education, of which
Cañares is a vital element, has been considered by many as one of the nation's
finest. | An
accountant by profession, Cañares has been managing his consulting office
over the past few years. Apart from his being a practicing accountant, he is also
an avid researcher. He has presented research papers in the United Kingdom, Greece,
Belgium, India, Thailand, Singapore, Ireland and Switzerland. Cañares
took up and finished his Masters in Developmental Economics at the prestigious
London School of Economics as a Ford Foundation scholar. He is set to leave for
the United States later this year to take up his doctoral studies as a Fulbright
scholar.
Rounding
up the list of finalists in the annual prestigious search were Dr. Evelita Celis
(Technological Institute of the Philippines), for NCR; Dr. Alice Valerio (De La
Salle University), for Luzon; and Dr. Virginia Lourdes Yacapin (Xavier University),
for Mindanao.
The
board of judges was composed by Cesar Buenaventura of BEP Financial Services as
chair, and Sanjiv Vohra, City Country Officer-Philippines, Gerardo Ablaza Jr.,
Ayala Corporation's Senior Managing Director, Roberto Borromeo of FINEX Research
and Development Foundation, Dr. Libertad P. Garcia of CHED, Hilario Tan of the
Asian Institute of Management and National Treasurer Roberto Tan as members.
