Police now on highest alert

MANILA. Police forces in Metro Manila would go on its highest alert level starting dawn today, eve of Labor Day, amid renewed reports of destabilization plots against the Arroyo government.

The military, on the other hand, is expected to remain on blue alert, the second highest alert level, as it downplayed a report on the latest power grab plot dubbed as "Oplan Manggagawa."

"We will go on full alert today and I appeal to rally organizers not to violate the law. Hopefully they would do their activities according to the law," said Metro Manila police chief Director Vidal Querol.

When the military is on the highest alert status, all troops are required to report to their post while all leaves and days-off are automatically cancelled.

"We are still on blue alert nationwide," said Colonel Tristan Kison, chief of the AFP Public Information Office.

He said that so far there was no plan to put their troops on red alert for the May 1 celebration.

But we make a [security] assessment every day," said Kison.
