Lim wages war vs frats, gangs

City Mayor Dan Lim is up again with his commitment to fight against the upsurge of incidents involving fraternities and gangs operating in and outside campuses in the city.

MAYOR DAN LIM
The mayor vowed to re-intensify the campaign following the death of a certain Francisco Buslon Jr., 21, a student of the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology (CVSCAFT) who died after undergoing hazing initiation by a group identified as Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Fraternity (Megans) in Corella town.

During his weekly "Mayor's Report," Lim said he will order the strict implementation of the curfew on minors (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and the ban on liquor beyond 10 p.m. He said that the police will implement this even as he urged barangay officials to support the campaign.

Lim said the city will tap additional assets who can penetrate the school campuses as fraternities and gangs are part of the illegal activities prevalent in growing cities.

However, this is not an excuse, thus, he will go all-out in his war against fraternities and gangs.

Lim, who was acknowledged in the 2005 HNU Bohol Poll survey for his successful campaign against drug addiction in the city, vowed that after greatly reducing the proliferation of drugs, he will zero in on these groups of youngsters.

It maybe noted that for several months, there was a lull on the activities of these youngsters after Lim personally ordered the police to do a close-in surveillance.

It was only last week, that the incidents successively recurred thrice.

Upon ordering the campaign to commence, Mayor Lim warned personalities involved in the last hazing incident led by its alleged leader Mario Otero, 28, native of Tubod Dako, Loon town. Majority of the members who are not from this city were issued stern warning by the mayor after they were linked to the fatal incident.

The move of the mayor came even as various sectors have noted city hall's laxity in the imposition of the liquor ban after 10 p.m. In fact, some stores are noted to open wider their spaces in the late evening in order to accommodate more customers who buy beer and liquor up to wee hours in the morning.

Police noted a store at the corner of Lamdagan and Belderol Streets which has become a hangout of late-night drinkers. This was the site of last Tuesday's shooting incident.

The license of stores selling liquor beyond l0 p.m. will be revoked, however, tourist-related establishments like hotels, are excluded, the mayor said.

Earlier last week, an innocent ice cream vendor identified as Pastor Galido, 27, a native of Sierra Bullones town was shot after youngsters allegedly belonging to another fraternity were reportedly hunting one of its targets at the corner of Lamdagan and Belderol Streets., this city. Another shooting incident last Tuesday along Visarra Street also injured 18-year old Jeffrey Gaga of Dauis town.
